What Is the Divine Mercy Chaplet? History, Prayers & How to Pray It
Share
The Divine Mercy Chaplet is one of the most beloved Catholic prayers of the modern era — a simple, powerful chaplet of mercy given to the world through a Polish nun in the 1930s. Prayed on ordinary rosary beads, it takes only about ten minutes, yet carries with it extraordinary promises. Whether you are encountering this prayer for the first time or seeking to understand it more deeply, this guide covers the history, the prayers themselves, and how to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet step by step.
The Origin: St. Faustina and the Apparitions of Christ
The Chaplet of Divine Mercy traces its origin to St. Faustina Kowalska (1905–1938), a humble Polish nun of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. In 1935, while in Vilnius, Lithuania, St. Faustina received a vision of Jesus — appearing in white with two rays of light streaming from His Heart, one red and one white, representing the blood and water that flowed from His side when pierced on the Cross.
In this vision, Our Lord taught St. Faustina the words of the chaplet and asked that it be prayed as an act of trust in His infinite mercy. He also revealed the image now known as the Divine Mercy image, instructing that the words "Jesus, I trust in You" be written beneath it. St. Faustina recorded these experiences in her Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul, which became one of the most widely read spiritual works of the 20th century.
Pope John Paul II canonized St. Faustina in 2000, making her the first saint of the new millennium, and established the Second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday for the universal Church.
The Message of Divine Mercy
At the heart of the Divine Mercy devotion is a simple but profound theological truth: God's mercy is greater than any sin. Jesus revealed to St. Faustina that He desired a "refuge of mercy" for all souls — especially the greatest sinners — and that trust in His mercy is the key that opens the floodgates of grace. The chaplet is one of the primary expressions of this devotion, along with the Image, the Feast, the Hour of Mercy, and the spreading of the message.
The Prayers of the Divine Mercy Chaplet
The chaplet uses the following prayers, prayed on standard rosary beads:
Opening Prayer (Optional)
You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.
O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You! (repeat three times)
Our Father
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
The Eternal Father Prayer (on the large bead before each decade)
Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
The For the Sake of Prayer (on each of the ten small beads)
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
Closing Prayer (three times)
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

The chaplet is prayed on standard rosary beads. Here is the complete sequence:

2. On the first single bead, pray the Our Father.
3. On the next single bead, pray the Hail Mary.

9. Conclude with the Sign of the Cross.
The Promises Associated with the Chaplet
Our Lord made several promises to St. Faustina regarding those who pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet with trust. Among them, He promised great mercy at the hour of death for those who faithfully pray this chaplet, and consolation for those who pray it beside the dying. These promises are conditional on sincere trust — the chaplet is not a magic formula, but a prayer of surrender to God's infinite love.
